As a backup receiver, Henderson will play well on the Redskins. He has already proved himself worthy to play in the NFL and since he is a backup, there will be no added pressure for him to perform. So why did a player the caliber of Henderson choose to be a backup when he could have probably acquired a starting position somewhere else? The answer is, he has faith in the Redskins. I had a few other offers, but once this one came, I thought this was where I would be a good fit. The Redskins also signed veteran WRs Donte Stallworth and, of course, Henderson. Henderson was excited about joining the Redskins, stating, I had a few other offers, but once this one came, I thought this was where I would be a good fit. Apparently, Henderson could not create the separation from defensive backs and seemed to have lost some of his speed. (John McDonnell/The Washington Post) RICHMOND The Redskins released wide receiver Devery Henderson , who signed with the team this offseason and hoped to earn a roster spot at a crowded position. Henderson left the team on an excused absence last week after a death in his immediate family. Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Tuesday evening that he expected Henderson to return to the practice field on Wednesday . The circumstances regarding the change in plans and Hendersons release were not clear, but a person with knowledge of the situation said that the move didnt have anything to do with Hendersons absence for the funeral. Wide receivers Pierre Garcon , Josh Morgan , Santana Moss , Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson seem to have roster spots locked up. Dez Briscoe , Donte Stallworth , Lance Lewis , Chip Reeves , Skye Dawson and Nick Williams all are competing for one, or possibly two remaining roster spots. The Redskins currently have 87 players on the roster.

As it stands, Pierre Garcon , Josh Morgan , Santana Moss , Leonard Hankerson and Aldrick Robinson are options 1-5 on the depth chart. Stallworth, meanwhile, appeared in just one game for the Patriots last season, and Henderson managed 22 receptions with the Saints . Both players are on the wrong side of 30, and their NFL careers have generally fallen short of expectations. Then again, Stallworth and Henderson could be camp bodies the team could re-sign during the season if there are injuries at the position.
