Friend(s) Email More Columns > It’s no secret Mark Ingram failed to live up to expectations in his first two NFL seasons. With a less-cluttered depth chart in New Orleans and health finally on his side, is it Ingram’s time to make an impact for the Saints ? The running back appears to be off to a good start this summer. The third-year pro received the majority of carries with the first team Monday, a good sign entering a season in which he’s expected to split time with Pierre Thomas . Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune wrote that Thomas “continued to look strong, fast and fluid” in practice, adding that “the buzz would probably be through the roof by now” if this were Ingram’s first camp. The Saints invested a first-round draft pick in Ingram two years ago, hoping he could be the punishing back who could provide balance to the team’s offense. He has been slowed by knee and toe injuries, and his 3.9 yards-per-carry average speaks to the lack of big-play ability.

They say, Hey I want to help my teammate help him push him to be better. You were here last year in the preseason and you know a lot of the receivers and tight ends on this team. How much has that really helped you this year because you are on the same page early on with the receivers and tight ends? Last training camp, (and) preseason I didn’t receive a lot of reps for obvious reasons.

“Kenny has a lot of talent and I think he’s going to be a great player,” he said. “Kenny understands football, and that’s the main thing. He doesn’t act like a rookie or make rookie mistakes. “If he makes a mistake, he fixes it. I think he’s got a very promising future and hopefully I’m around to see it for a while.” Heating Up It has been extremely hot for most of the Saints’ 12 preseason practices, but Wednesday was easily the hottest day of camp. Meteorologists said the heat reached 98 degrees, and with the heat index it was more like 110 degrees. The conditions obviously affected a lot of players, as several left practice early due to heat-related complications.

But the respect that has been earned is obvious; twice, he has been named captain of his unit because of his production and toughness. Roby has missed seven regular-season games, out of 64 possible, the last four seasons. All misses have been due to injury. Hes got to have the mentality, thats for darn sure, McMahon said. A lot of these guys come in from college and they havent really done much special teams so weve got to train them, make sure weve got them in positions to where they can get the job done for our team and also be successful for themselves. Its a mentality and a skill that you have to develop.” Roby has it.

The restaurant’s manager personally apologized to Brees about the photo and donated $888.88 to the Brees Dream Foundation because eight is the luckiest number in Chinese culture. He will certainly be fun to watch. Drew Brees is enjoying the first full training camp since a couple of years ago and is clearly fired up but the best thing going this preseason download as far as QBs go is the competition for the backup QB spot. There are two veterans and a rookie going for one of the most coveted positions in football. Brees backup gets paid to sit and learn basically and usually improves his standing around the NFL by the time his contract is up. The three going out for the job are Seneca Wallace, Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin.

Smith spent his entire career at defensive end. Now, hes been moved to outside linebacker in the teams new 3-4 scheme. Smith primarily will be asked to be a pass-rusher. But I want to see how he looks against the run and in coverage. The running game.
