Saints RB Darren Sproles out vs. Eagles after hand surgery

This didnt happen entirely by accident. It happened, in large part because quarterback/King of New Orleans Drew Brees wanted it to happen. It happened because Brees worked hard to recruit Sproles. Darn right I did, Brees said. Theres history with Brees and Sproles. Brees last season in San Diego (2005) was Sproles rookie year. The two have worked out together in California (where Brees keeps a home) in offseasons through the years, and that happened even more this offseason due to the NFL lockout.

Eagles after hand surgery More Darren Sproles has a broken hand. (Jack Dempsey / AP) New Orleans Saints running back Darren Sproles has been ruled out of Monday nights game against the Philadelphia Eagles due to a hand fracture that required surgery. Saints interim coach Joe Vitt did not offer a clear time table for Sproles return but said the speedy, sure-handed back will be re-evaluated next week, as reported by Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune . Vitt also declined to reveal which hand Sproles had injured, saying only whatever hand you put down, you have a 50-50 chance of being right. The New Orleans run game has been virtually non-existent at times this season, often because Drew Brees and company are playing from behind. Sproles has only 26 carries on the season but is second on the team with 39 receptions and total offensive yardage (440). He also remains a threat on kick returns. Starter Pierre Thomas will continue to lead the way on Monday with disappointing second-round back Mark Ingram getting his usual 3-7 carries. Chris Ivory could also see action for the first time this season, Triplett reports. Thomas is a capable pass-catcher, but none of the three backs offer the versatility Sproles provides, meaning Brees could rely more heavily on tight end Jimmy Graham and receiver Lance Moore .

“We’re going to have to have a few guys that pick up the slack,” offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael said. “Chris has been patient. He’s been great. He’s been out at every practice and has given us his all, his best effort. This will be a chance for him to get some opportunities.” NOTES: WR Courtney Roby also was ruled out of the game with a shoulder injury. He has just one catch for 9 yards.

RotoExperts Fantasy Mailbag: Darren Sproles Is Better Than Perceived

As usual, he’s operating as more of a receiving threat with 39 catches on the year, but overall he’s still being underutilized. And to make matters worse, Sproles has missed the last two games with a hand injury that required surgery (according to NBC Sports ). Sproles injured his hand during the team’s Week 8 loss to the Denver Broncos, and apparently the injury did not cause great discomfort, as Sproles didn’t even realize his hand was broken until the following morning (according to CBS Sports via Twitter ). #Saints RB Darren Sproles says he had no idea his hand was broken after Denver game until woke up in pain Monday, had X-rays. Saints RapidReports (@CBSSaints) November 16, 2012 It has only been three weeks since the injury, which hasn’t provided ample time to heal, but Sproles is surely anxious to get on the field. The Saints take on the Oakland Raiders this Sunday, and since the Oakland defense modestly ranks 23rd in the NFL, the presence of Sproles is certainly something New Orleans would prefer. But despite a short three-week healing period, Sproles returned to practice on Thursday and Friday (according to ), and it’s already rumored that he’ll return to the lineup on Sunday. Darren Sproles Fantasy Outlook Scott Cunningham/Getty Images With five losses on the season already, Darren Sproles and the Saints have little margin for error if they wish to preserve their playoff hopes, which could explain why Sproles is rushing back to the lineup. If Sproles can play like his normal self, he’s obviously a solid option against a weak Oakland defense. Hehas a touchdown in three of his last four games, while he has exceeded 50 total yards in five of his seven games. But for now, it’s best to hold off and take a wait-and-see approach, as long as you have other options at running back. Sproles is back in the practice lineup, but that doesn’t guarantee that he’ll receive the same typical workload.

The Versatility of Darren Sproles

It very well could have been one of the best acquisitions for the Saints since Drew Brees himself. Darren Sproles is versatile in the run game. At 5’6″ and 190 pounds, he is a tough target to wrap up. In a New Orleans Saints ‘ backfield that has been more than uncertain in recent years, Sproles has provided a spicy kick on the run and the pass not seen in recent years. He is fifth in the NFL with 5 punt and kickoff return touchdowns since 2006. And Sproles made NFL history when he scored his first two touchdowns.

Its where he has a strong and enthusiastic fan base. And its where everything started, he said. Kansas State brought home three championships in the 2012-2013 academic year, including its third football title. It was K-States first since 2003, when Sproles led the Wildcats in his junior year. It was good to see us back on top, Sproles said. He added that it feels good to hear the Wildcats thrown into the discussion of best college teams when hes around his NFL teammates. Sproles hasnt been on the K-State campus in four years, although he visits Kansas every year. He remains in contact with coach Bill Snyder and last spoke to him about a month ago.

But even though Bush hadn’t developed into the star they hoped he would be, New Orleans wanted to keep him because he was the kind of space player that their system needed. Bush left for the Miami Dolphins during the frenzied fall free-agent season, so the Saints found a new space guy: Darren Sproles. 1 The ex-Charger signed within 24 hours of Bush’s departure , on the explicit rationale that Sproles would be the new Bush . In coaching the Saints, Payton takes advantage of the three best ways to use space players. First are screen passes plays designed to get the runner into open space, preferably with blockers ahead of him. Second is the space player’s role as an underneath receiver, where he provides an easy option for a quarterback while drawing coverage away from downfield receivers. And, finally, a space player can be a runner on draws and sweeps after the earlier plays have forced the defense to substitute favorable (for the offense) personnel.

Saints RB Darren Sproles out after undergoing hand surgery

Sproles chose New Orleans over Philadelphia and or a return to San Diego, which used its franchise tag on Sproles in each of the past two seasons. The designation allowed Sproles to make nearly $14 million over the past two years alone, but didn’t give him the long-term commitment he desired despite playing in every game for San Diego over the past three years as a key component of coach Norv Turner’s offense. He’s just one part of a dynamic group of running backs in New Orleans, but Sproles has always been at his best as a change-of-pace back who can cause trouble for opponents in small doses. He rushed for 267 yards and caught 59 passes for 520 yards last season, his third straight with at least 29 catches to go with 330 yards rushing. When NFL teams finally were cleared to sign free agents last month, Saints quarterback Drew Brees immediately went after Sproles, briefly his Chargers teammate and a longtime workout buddy in San Diego. Brees barraged him with texts, the quarterback gleefully admits. ”Every spring and summer, we always work out together,” Sproles said. ”Then, he would always say that he wanted me in a Saints uniform. He would just be playing, but it actually came true.” Sproles already is working with Heisman Trophy-winning rookie running back Mark Ingram, who returned to practice with the Saints on Thursday after missing two days with a swollen knee.

NFL Strategy: Darren Sproles and the Rise of the Space Player

In a 10-team non-PPR with 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, and 1 TE, I can keep three players and lose the round from last year. I can pick three from Colin Kaepernick, Alfred Morris, David Wilson and Randall Cobb. All were free agent pickups, so I wont lose any draft picks. Who should I keep? Morris had a great rookie season with the Redskins with 335 carries and was second in rushing yards with 1,613 and scored 13 touchdowns. Many will say his success was tied to Robert Griffin III since the defense had to pay close attention to him, but Morris gained 1,001 yards after contact. Wilson has a ton of talent and is an explosive back. Even if he is in a timeshare with Andre Brown, who is injury prone, Wilson will play a big role for the Giants.
